A strong opening hole which favours a draw off the tee onto a fairway which turns left towards the green and has trees on the left and out of bounds on the right. The green is long and narrow and is protected by bunkers front and left and by tricky slopes all around. Be very happy if you start off here with a par.

A tough opening tee shot that requires accuracy more than length. Right side of fairway is perfect.

Men – Par 5, 492 yards, SI 10

Ladies – Par 5, 435 yards, SI 7

This hole provides a somewhat intimidating tee shot from within an avenue of trees and with a carry of 150 yards to the fairway. Take care to see the road is clear before playing! Long hitters should reach the green in two and expect a birdie, whilst others will be left with a slightly downhill pitch for the third shot to a sizable green, and hopefully a putt for a four.

A good tee shot will set up a birdie chance. Left side of fairway allowing for slope to the right.

Men – Par 4, 319 yards, SI 6

Ladies – Par 4, 279 yards, SI 9

A birdie opportunity for low handicappers and long straight hitters. The tee shot is slightly uphill and care must be taken to avoid the trees on either side of the fairway. Beware of the two bunkers as the approach shot is made to a slightly elevated green protected by bunkers left and right. This can be a tricky green to putt on depending on pin location.

Straightforward tee shot. Try and keep your approach shot under the hole.

Men – Par 4, 378 yards, SI 4

Ladies – Par 4, 342 yards, SI 3

A well-directed tee shot is essential at this challenging hole to avoid trees on the left and out of bounds on the right and still land on a fairway which turns slightly to the right just before the 150 yard marker. From here the approach to the green is straightforward but be careful of the bunkers on either side and a close out of bounds if you overclub or pull it left. Take care crossing the road to the 5th tee which is on the RHS once across. Players coming down the 9th have priority on 10th tee.

Men – Par 4, 381 yards, SI 2

Ladies – Par 4, 330 yards, SI 1

This demanding hole needs an accurate drive from the elevated tee to a fairway that slopes steadily uphill at a right to left angle and has trees and out of bounds left and right. The second shot can be difficult to judge to a hilltop sloping green surrounded by mounds and run-offs. This hole is not index 2 on the card for no reason. Before moving to the next tee, stand for a second to enjoy the stunning views.

Insider Tip

A testing tee shot favouring the right half of the fairway. Long green can be difficult to club approach shot. Par is a good score.

Men – Par 4, 340 yards, SI 12

Ladies – Par 4, 310 yards, SI 15

A true risk and reward 90 degree dogleg left hole. Drive safe down the middle and you should only have a short iron shot to the green which is protected on the left by a large pond and at the rear by a stream and out of bounds. Drop zones may be used if necessary. Longer hitters will try to draw their tee shot to carry the rough, hedge and drain comprising the dogleg to leave themselves close to the green and set up a birdie opportunity.

Insider Tip

You don’t need to take a really aggressive line off the tee. A safe tee shot still sets up a birdie opportunity.

Men – Par 4, 319 yards, SI 18

Ladies – Par 4, 315 yards, SI 5

The uphill tee shot to an elevated fairway is not difficult but you will need to be long if you want to get a sight of the bottom of the pin for your approach shot. There are no bunkers but approach shots that are right or long will run down greenside slopes and leave a difficult up and down for par. Caution needs to be exercised here to get a par.

A birdie opportunity for the longer hitters. Better short than long with your approach.

Men – Par 3, 158 yards, SI 16

Ladies – Par 3, 149 yards, SI 17

The first par 3 is straightforward looking and will reward an accurate shot provided you have given careful thought to club selection. Drift left and, at best, you’ll be in a deep greenside bunker or, at worst, out of bounds. Hit long and the slope behind the green will possibly take you out of bounds. Many players are known to bail out right here, especially in a strong right to left wind, and rely on a pitch and putt for a 3.

Men – Par 4, 337 yards, SI 14

Ladies – Par 4, 330 yards, SI 13

Another risk and reward downhill par 4. A water hazard short of the green leaves the player with a decision as to how close to the drain they want to drive. A fade is the preferred shot to the left to right angled fairway but watch the out of bounds and drain close on the left. An optimum tee shot will be rewarded by a short pitch to a green protected by a deep bunker, slopes and trees. A realistic birdie chance.

Left side of the fairway opens up the green for your approach and takes the trees short right of the green out of play. Driver not required.

Men – Par 3, 209 yards, SI 5

Ladies – Par 4, 203 yards, SI 18

This is the signature hole on the course. From the elevated tee, the green appears to be sliced diagonally by the out of bounds hedge. There is no future in pushing it to the right off the tee however; a drawn shot can make good use of the slopes to reach the green. Missing left leaves an almost impossible up and down up a steep slope or from under trees. A 3 often feels like a birdie here and many members are sometimes happy to score 4 and move on.

Insider Tip

Your are now entering Amen corner. This green and bunker rewards a good shot. A par is a great score (note where the pin is located on the 11th).

Men – Par 4, 374 yards, SI 1

Ladies – Par 4, 277 yards, SI 14

The tee shot requires concentration and accuracy as there is a 150 yard carry over an out of bounds area, trees and rough before reaching a fairway which has also got out of bounds all up the right side and trees if you play too safe and go left. The approach shot is uphill to an ‘armchair’ green where slopes can often gather the ball in. The four bunkers short of the green should only come into play if you have been in trouble off the tee; however, overshooting the green will leave an extremely difficult up and down.

You don’t need to take a really aggressive line off the tee. A safe tee shot still sets up a birdie opportunity.

Men – Par 3, 138 yards, SI 15

Ladies – Par 3, 127 yards, SI 8

Known as ‘The Pitch’ the third par 3 is everyone’s favourite as it offers a realistic chance at a ‘2’ irrespective of ability. The hedge in front of the tee should not put you off; however, the bunkers at the front and sides must be avoided if you are to get a chance to putt for your birdie.

Very tricky green with very few straight putts.

Ladies – Par 4, 310 yards, SI 10

This hole is reachable off the tee for long hitters in a favourable wind as the fairway approach slopes downhill towards the green. For others it will require an accurate tee shot to avoid trees left and right. From the fairway it is a simple pitch into the green but be careful to avoid the front bunkers. Your putting line on the green could present quite a challenge if it has one of the drumlins, after which the hole is named, on your route to the cup.

Good birdie chance for long hitters but avoid the fairway bunkers.

Men – Par 5, 520 yards, SI 11

Ladies – Par 5, 449 yards, SI 6

It’s time to open up the shoulders; however, the second of the two par 5s is still a ‘3 shotter’ for all but the longest hitters. The narrow fairway is difficult to hit from the tee due to its right to left slope, and visiting the line of trees on the left will only leave a chip out recovery shot at best. The lay up second shot is all about the distance you want to leave to the two tier raised green which has a hidden, deep, wide ravine protecting it at the front as well as bunkers left and right. Players are very happy to leave here with a par but many chalk up an unwelcome 7, or more.

Insider Tip

Perfect risk/reward hole. Off the white tees play it as a 3 shotter. A draw from right side of fairway is perfect.

Men – Par 3, 167 yards, SI 13

Ladies – Par 3, 111 yards, SI 16

This straightforward hole is longer than it looks and few tee shots find the back bunker. A slight slope at the front stops underhit shots whilst the bunkers left and right will catch those efforts that are slightly off line. Think about hitting one club more than you did at the 8th for the chance of a putt for another ‘2’.

Men – Par 4, 314 yards, SI 7

Ladies – Par 4, 306 yards, SI 4

Another risk and reward hole where straight rather than long hitting will often be more rewarded. The fairway doglegs left at just over 200yards out and a large pond is located just on the corner. The approach shot will require a short iron to a raised, small armchair green protected all around by tricky slopes. Overshooting the green is not an option to consider. Long hitters may try for the green but out of bounds awaits a tee shot that strays left.

Men – Par 4, 313 yards, SI 3

Ladies – Par 4, 302 yards, SI 2

A superbly shaped short par 4. Accuracy, not length, is needed off the tee to avoid the penalising trees and rough on the right and arrive at the corner of this left to right dogleg. The approach shot is made uphill to an elevated green with a narrow entrance protected by bunkers and run off slopes. Overshoot, or miss on the right, and you are faced with a devilish downhill chip onto a green which slopes severely from back right to front left.

Insider Tip

This is a gem of a par 4 at this stage of the round and can be a ‘card wrecker’.

Men – Par 3, 196 yards, SI 9

Ladies – Par 3, 183 yards, SI 12

Reconstruction of the 18th to provide more of a challenging finish and improve playability still makes this a strong par 3 finishing hole. With the addition of a greenside bunker on the right, and mounding on the left, the surface of the green itself has also been levelled out. The angle of the green from the tee often suits a left to right ball flight with a medium to long iron.
